What a carbon laser facial does

A carbon laser facial spreads a thin layer of carbon lotion over the face, lets it dry into the pores, then passes a Q-switched laser over the skin. The carbon absorbs the laser energy and is lifted off with the surface oil and dead skin. That is why it is also called a carbon peel, Hollywood peel or black doll facial.

It is mainly used for:

• Oily skin and visibly enlarged pores.
• Blackheads and a congested T-zone.
• Dullness and rough texture.
• Mild, uneven tone.

It is not a treatment for deep acne scars or melasma. Those need a dermatologist and usually other treatments.

How a session goes

A session takes about 30 to 45 minutes:

• Your face is cleansed and your eyes are covered with protective goggles.
• Carbon lotion is applied and left to dry.
• The laser passes over the skin. Most people feel warmth and a light snapping.
• The carbon is removed, then a soothing serum and sunscreen go on.

Mild redness usually settles within a few hours, so most people go back to normal plans the same day.

How many carbon laser sessions you need

Clinics usually suggest three to six sessions, two to four weeks apart, for oily skin and pores. One session gives a fresh, clean look for an event; a course is what makes a lasting difference to oil and texture. At live deal prices:

Carbon laser or hydrafacial?

Both clean the pores, but in different ways. A carbon laser facial suits oily skin with enlarged pores, while a hydrafacial suits most skin types, including dry and sensitive skin, and adds hydration. Who should be careful

Carbon laser is low-downtime, but it is still a laser. Talk to the doctor first if:

• You have darker skin or a history of dark marks after spots. Wrong settings can cause pigmentation, so ask who sets the laser and how often they treat skin like yours.
• You are pregnant.
• You have active, inflamed acne, eczema or a skin infection on your face.
• You are taking isotretinoin, or stopped recently.
• You have a tan or sunburn, or have had a peel or laser in the last two weeks.

Aftercare

• Wear sunscreen every day for at least a week.
• Skip retinol, scrubs and acids for a few days.
• Avoid saunas, steam and hard workouts for 24 hours.
• Use a gentle moisturiser and don't pick at any flaking.

Booking red flags

• No doctor or trained laser specialist on site.
• No skin assessment or questions about your medication.
• No goggles offered.
• A price far below the deals above with no clear reason.
• Pressure to prepay six sessions on your first visit.
